NY metropolitan area pop group Nova Social will play at Coco66 in Brooklyn on Thursday, October 14. In addition to brand new material, the band will play songs from their 6-song self-titled EP (released in Fall 2009 on Big Sleep Records), which mates their ambitious pop songwriting with electronic and dance music influences.

In addition to founding members David Nagler and Thom Soriano, Nova Social will have an expanded live unit featuring synths, vocalists and a live string trio.

Also on the bill are Misty Roses, chanteuse Robert Conroy’s cinematic pop combo, and Kesa Gatame, the new modular synth & vocal project from David Grant (Direct From Hollywood Cemetery, Heks Orkest).

Nova Social has released two full-lengths on their Big Sleep Records imprint, The Jefferson Fracture and Other Words from Tomorrow’s Dictionary: and contributed their cover of The Specials’ “Little Bitch” to the ’80s movie tribute High School Reunion.

Singer David Nagler served as musical director and co-producer on Chris Mills’ acclaimed orchestral pop release The Wall to Wall Sessions(which led to his inclusion in The L Magazine’s “Ultimate Brooklyn Supergroup”), arranged a Welsh men’s choir for the Mekons’ Jon Langford and plays a variety of instruments for John Wesley Harding & The English UK, Chris Lee and others.

The featured performers are:

MISTY ROSES “Taking their name from a Tim Hardin song, Misty Roses combine pop melodrama with electronic texture in a manner rarely heard since The Associates. Robert Conroy’s vocals are a dead ringer for the late Billy Mackenzie, yet the melodies they trace frequently evoke Scott Walker’s classic late 60’s albums…. Much of the music on Villainess — [their new album, currently available] — is disturbingly intense…lending considerable substance to Conroy’s theatrical meditations on beauty, obsession and loss.” ~ The Wire

Lapis Lazuli is a solo instrumental project written, produced, and performed by Kurt Wolf on laptop, guitar, and analog synth.  Kurt Wolf is known for his contributions to downtown noise rock acts, Pussy Galore, Boss Hog, Loudspeaker, Emma Peel, Foetus Inc.  Kurt Wolf was given the name by his good friends Antony and the Johnsons, hence the brand.

Lapis Lazuli music exists in kind of a parallel universe were soundtrack composers dominate the later part of the 20th century musical landscape.  A warped vision of what music from the era may have sounded like minus the utopian hippy hegemony of the late sixties and early seventies.
